The best coffee on Glasgow's Southside
From Victoria Road to Shawlands, the southside's independent café scene punches well above its weight. Here are ten worth leaving the West End for.
1. Short Long Black — Victoria Road, Govanhill
A labour of love from owner Darryl, who sources his own green beans and has them roasted by Thomson's. Beautifully fitted-out with all-day brunch and a partnership with Burnfield Bakery for the baked goods — plus a collaboration with Bare Bones Chocolate for soft serve ice cream. The ceramics alone are worth visiting for.
Order: A long black and whatever's in the pastry cabinet that morning.
2. Café Strange Brew — Shawlands
Self-proclaimed home of "the best brunch in the south and a damn fine cup of coffee" — and they're not far wrong. Quirky, Twin Peaks-referencing charm, big portions, artisan roasts, and a genuinely warm atmosphere. Dog-friendly too. Go on a weekday if you want a seat without queuing.
Order: The weekend brunch — it sells out for good reason.
3. The Good Coffee Cartel — Southside
A vibrant roastery-café that roasts all their beans on-site, so you can watch the whole journey from producer to cup. They partner with local bakeries for the food side, and the result is a considered, full-package visit. Energetic, community-minded, and very good coffee.
Order: Whatever single origin is on the espresso bar that week.
4. Grindhouse Coffee Roasters — Southside
A fantastic little café where Scottish meets Mediterranean on the food menu. Speedy service, plant-based milk options (oat, soy, almond), and consistently excellent espresso. Compact, but punchy — a genuine neighbourhood gem.
Order: Flat white with oat milk and a breakfast plate.
5. Grain and Grind — Near Victoria Infirmary
The original Grain and Grind location, where it all began in 2018. They now roast over 20 blends in Inverness, working with farm cooperatives across 15 countries with an ethical and organic focus. Bright, relaxed interiors and solid seasonal dishes alongside the coffee. The Kinder Bueno hot chocolate is a guilty pleasure worth knowing about.
Order: A single origin batch brew alongside a house sandwich.
6. BAM Glasgow — Southside
Coffee shop meets vintage retail — espresso from rotating guest roasters alongside handpicked vintage homewares and gifts. If you love a browse as much as a brew, this is unmissable. A genuine hidden gem that rewards the curious.
Order: A guest-roast espresso, then spend too long looking at the wares.
7. It All Started Here — Southside
A multi-roaster café that puts a different roaster from around the UK on espresso and batch brew every week, keeping things genuinely interesting for regulars. Lovely baked goods, a brunch menu, and now open six days a week (Tuesday–Sunday). One for the coffee nerds.
Order: Ask the barista what's on batch brew — they'll have an opinion.
8. Gusto and Relish — Southside
A café-deli hybrid serving delicious homemade food alongside a well-stocked deli counter. It leans more neighbourhood café than specialty espresso bar, but the quality is consistent and the community feel is strong. Great for a longer, lazier visit.
Order: Something from the deli counter with a flat white.
9. Thomson's Coffee — Giffnock
Glasgow's oldest roaster — founded in 1841 — now has an espresso bar in Giffnock on the southside. Supplying many of the city's best cafés with over 20 specialty coffees, this is the chance to try the source material directly. A pilgrimage for any serious coffee fan in the city.
Order: An espresso or americano, black, to taste the beans properly.
10. Wild Flours — Southside
Strictly speaking a gluten-free bakery rather than a coffee shop, but the coffee is solid and the bakes are award-winning. An essential stop for anyone with dietary requirements who's tired of compromising on quality. The mother-and-son team have built something genuinely special since 2013.
Order: Whatever the seasonal bake is, with a flat white.
Glasgow's southside coffee scene has grown considerably in recent years. These spots represent the best of it — all independent, all worth your time.
